Early Treatment

Early Interceptive Orthodontics

This involves a short course of orthodontic treatment in childhood that addresses issues before they become a more serious problem later. While there is no exact age for children to begin orthodontic treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends visiting the orthodontist around age seven. By this age, most children have enough permanent teeth to determine whether an orthodontic problem exists or is developing.

Here are a few things to look for that may mean your child needs to see an orthodontist:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Finger or thumb sucking habits
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth
  • Unhealthy bite such as underbite and crossbite

Early orthodontic treatment varies among patients. It may involve removable or fixed orthodontic appliances that can create more room for crowded teeth, preserve space for unerupted teeth, or create facial symmetry through manipulated jaw growth.

Early treatment isn’t always necessary. The easiest way to find out what your child needs is to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Chiu. Initial screening can give you peace of mind that you haven’t missed a critical window of opportunity for your child.
